it's almost summer

i ran about 10km this morning along the beach near my house.
on the way back, I went down to the sea and put my legs and hands in the water.it helped me cool down and it was great!
i wanted to jump in and swim so bad though. i'll go running in my swimming suit or something next time:)
im excited.

gift from the sea

my mom's friend stopped by at our house this morning and gave us a bag full of fresh wakame, a sea vegetable. and my dad got home with some mekabu, the bottom part of wakame. so i light boiled them and ate them with my lunch. they are dark brown when raw but they turn bright green when you pour hot water over them. they were pretty good. crunchy and a bit salty...the taste of the ocean!:) I'm so lucky to be able to enjoy these freshly picked foods from the nature.

pictures: raw wakame and mekabu(top), boiled wakame and mekabu, today's lunch with brown rice + green soybean, another sea veggie dish "igoneri".

Garden update

It's been about 5 weeks since I planted potatoes and kale in a tiny space of our yard.
The potatoes' growth rate after sprouting has been amazing.
I pulled out some stems and added soil from the mountain area to help the potato roots grow bigger.
The kale is about 15cm/5inches tall. I should transplant the seedling to the ground soon.
I enjoy taking care of plants.

Straw sandals

Finally finished making my first straw sandals yesterday.
It was hard but so much fun and fulfilling.
I put so much energy and love into them.
I feel a little hesitated to wear them right now. I don't wanna make them dirty.
They are too lovely and shiny:)

Today's score

I found so much wild onions (round one and fusiform one) on a sunny hill today.
They were bigger than the ones I find normally so I was afraid they might have been grown by somebody but they were not.
There were so much more than I can possibly eat so I pulled a bunch and came home.
On the way home, I stopped a bit to pick some mugworts too.
I'm going to make pancake type of thing with the mugworts and onion greens, and soup with the round onion.
I'd like to pickle the fusiform onion.

a little progress at a time

it takes a lot of time to cultivate the land im using because it's hard and has so much weeds, and so many rocks and glass pieces somebody threw in long time ago, and i need to remove them all and add fertilizers before i plant anything.
but there has been a lot of small progress, which is exciting and motivating to see.
i finally finished planting chard, beets, pumpkin and carrot seeds over the last few days. a lot more veggies like corn, tomatoes, potatoes, beans have already been planted and waiting to grow.

but its just a beginning.
theres so much more to work on.
it sure will keep me busy for a while.

cheers

a full day

went to the rice field in Hamochi with my dad,
moved traies of rice seedlings (now they are about 5 inches tall) into the rice field; this helps them grow more roots,
cut grass around the rice field with a small machine,
dug inside edge of the rice field with a hoe to prevent weeds to invade it,
picked some warabi,
had lunch with Ooyama-san; brown rice with soy beans and azuki beans miso soup with takenoko or bamboo shoots, tofu, warabi; boiled udo in sesami seeds sauce, pickled plum, etc.
planted pumpkin seeds near my dad's cabin after digging a bit and adding some mountain soil? and leaves
came home
went running for an hour or so
watered plants
took a shower
played the piano a bit
had dinner; brown rice, natto, cucumber with miso-honey-young leaves of Japanese pepper sauce, cooked takanoko, etc.

time to take some rest
